Do you believe in the supernatural? If you look at the media franchise it’s a pretty hot topic. We have movies like
Harry Potter,
Twilight,
Paranormal Activity (as well as a laundry list of horror movies),
The Chronicles of Narnia and the list goes on and on. Our culture is crammed with references to the supernatural. The real question, however, is: Do Americans truly believe in the supernatural or is it simply viewed as plain fiction? According to polls many Americans do believe in the supernatural. A poll conducted by
Pew Research in 2009 showed that nearly one fifth of the American population believes in ghosts. Some polls even show greater amounts ranging from 33% to almost 40% conducted in a
CBS poll in 2010. That just reflects the number of people who believe in ghosts. It doesn’t even begin to breach the surface of how many believe in other supernatural phenomenon. When you think about it, there is a litany of supernatural beings to which one can prescribe. You have angels, demons, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, fairies, trolls, mermaids, wizards, witches, warlocks and zombies to name a few. Honestly, when you define the supernatural beings as those who exist outside of our physical universe, you even include the belief in God in any form. When you break it down, you will find the majority of people believe in the supernatural in one state or another. Even many atheists believe in the supernatural because they will often subscribe to the idea of other life forms greater than ours. They may theorize that believing in alien life forms is not belief in the supernatural because those life forms would still exist in the same physical realm, but this is a farfetched idea. How would you define our physical realm? Is it our planet, our galaxy, our universe? What about worm holes and alternate dimensions? How does string theory come into play?
The thing is that most people believe in the supernatural whether or not they will admit it. I admit that I believe in the supernatural. In future blogs I will look at different supernatural beings and tell you what my opinion is concerning them. I will also discuss how the Bible describes the supernatural. You may be surprised by the number of supernatural beings listed in the Bible. As I stated earlier, belief in God is belief in the supernatural. The Bible covers more than most people realize.
I will end this blog with the same question that I started with. Do you believe in the supernatural?
